SQUIGGLECRAFT

Demystifying "kappies" and all those other thingies in Afrikaans words

Whatever your primary language may be, if you need to understand the basics of Afrikaans spelling (even if it's just to be able to help your kids with their homework!), look no further than this seminar.

I will show you that it's not that difficult. You will leave the session considerably enlightened and very happy that you came.

The primary textbook on Afrikaans spelling conventions is Afrikaanse Woordelys en Spelreëls (AWS) – and it is an excellent resource. Unfortunately it is relatively inaccessible, in terms of both language medium and level of presentation, to non-native speakers of Afrikaans who need to know the rules governing the use of all those little squiggles and thingies.

Perhaps you are among those who are not sure when to use a "kappie", one of the two accent symbols, an apostrophe or a "deelteken" (what many people call by its German name, "Umlaut"). Or who aren't sure when to join words and when not to, when to double consonants, when to drop one of two vowels ...

Or perhaps you have children who are battling with these things at school.

Help is at hand at last! This highly accessible course in "squigglecraft" is about to come to your rescue. I will answer all your questions – and more – and will do so in a way that will empower you. There are some rules, obviously, and I'll tell you what they are. But instead of merely churning out a zillion rules and sub-rules I will show you how to think about these conventions, so that you can figure things out for yourselves afterwards – in the office, in the classroom, or at home when your offspring (or theirs!) need help with their homework.
